Start early -get all non-essential things boxed up at least two weeks before moving, all knick-knacks, spare bedding etc.
Mark all boxes with contents and room they are to be put in.
Box essential things last of all and put them on the van last.
Leave as many things in drawers as possible, rather than packing them up then just having to unpack them again in the same drawers when you arrive.
The main thing is start early - it takes a very long time to pack up even the smallest of houses.

When we moved I put coloured stickers on the boxes. Eg. Red for bedroom one, yellow for kitchen, green for lounge. It meant the removal men put the boxes in the right rooms which meant less work for us in the following days.
I had an “arrival” box containing a small set of mugs, plates, cutlery wrapped in a couple of small hand towels and a set of sheets so that we had enough to made the first evening and night comfortable.

everything APG and naomi said and additionally pay for the movers to pack for you. When we moved, as well it being less stressful, it gives you better insurance cover from the movers. Either take with you fabulous picnic food in cold bags or suss out a local excellent takeaway if allowed where you are. You have probabaly all the cat expertise you need but if not shut cat and litter tray on one room and threaten the removal men with painful death if they so much as touch the door handle. Depending on your cat, a harness and long line can be helpful for the first few days and if you decide to go this route, get the cat used to it well before you move. maybe a cattery for a few days as an option? Fit as much essential/precious stuff as you can in your own car...by essential I mean kettle and hot drink fixings a set of bedding and towels and the wherewithall to get clean, the aforementioned food, a change of at least underthings and top clothes as well if they will fit, any small things of value, either sentimental or monetary.
If you have a small room, clear that as much as possible and put cat in there as long as you can with food, water and litter tray, then cat carrier in your car. Haven't read all posts too well but there is good advice there but I will say take toilet paper and light bulbs. The previous owners of our house took the lot except strip light in kitchen and garage.
Make sure the movers know EXACTLY where to go.
I live in a small complex of maisonettes...2 identical buildings face each other across a parking lot. They are named differently but are numbered the same.
When I moved here, they took my daughter's piano to the other building...up 2 flights of stairs. :(

A little scare story.......
Last time we moved we spent weeks preparing and packing, as you do, loaded up the lorry and drove to new house. On arrival we were met by another set of removal men who declared, “you won’t be getting in for hours yet. They only booked us half an hour ago and they’ve done no packing at all!” Apparently they had forgotten the date and carried on as if it was a normal day, the husband going to work and leaving wife baking!
