25 years ago next week I was under my duvet, tiny transistor radio tuned to radio Luxemburg and my ear piece in when I heard John Lennon was dead. Where were you?

on a tanker loading crude oil in the Gulf. Someone on the ship had heard it on the radio and thought it was a joke in poor taste

I was at work - I remember it really clearly. The guy who sat next to me said it in such a matter-of-fact voice! i was numb all day, got home, turned on the news, heard it was true, and cried ... a lot.

I was stunned, which I've never really understood since I didn't know the man, but I felt as if I'd lost someone near to me.

I heard it on "John Craven's Newsround". I was only 12 and I was not particularly into pop music - before John Lennon died, I knew what the Beatles were collectively but I was not familiar with who they all were individually.
