How Much Do Dental Procedures Cost (Roughly)?
9 Answers
I have extreme sensitivity in my gum (anything eaten cold and the pain is almost unbearable). Visited dentist. He did ordinary x-ray and deep x-ray and couldn't see anything wrong. He blew cold air onto my teeth and I ended up knocking the blower out of his hand, the pain was so bad. He established it was the last tooth, back bottom left (I had my wisdom teeth extracted years ago so no tooth beyond it). He said there's probably a microscopic crack in the tooth. He quoted me £200 for an extraction but said it could be more because it is a large tooth and has had more than one filling. Alternatively he also quoted me £1400 for root canal work and a crown..... and he can't actually see anything wrong. I suggested antibiotics but he said 'we don't give them out anymore'. I haven't agreed to any treatment yet. In fact I've been ringing round NHS dentists to try and get a second opinion (and cheaper treatment) but the local ones are not taking on new patients due to the COVID backlog. Please can you tell me of any similar experiences

I have teeth extracted on the National Health. Last one about 9 months ago was about £47 pounds so £200 private probably isn’t unreasonable . However, on the National Health all extractions cost the same. Re the statement on antibiotics, not true of National Health dentists if you have gum or tooth infections. If I were you I would consult another dentist before having treatment.
I'm not sure you need antibiotics; the dentist didn't identify an infection so nothing to treat on that front.
I would continue with the quest for a second opinion as he is offering a very confused plan of action. On the one hand its a microscopic crack in the tooth, on the other hand he recommends root canal work which wont address a crack but implies decay in the root.
Which is it?
Under the circumstances, I would agree to neither extraction nor root canal treatment myself.
NHS costs are easily checked online, but its almost impossible to find an NHS dentist taking new patients at the moment. Can you ask to see another dentist at your current practice?

try and swill mouth out with salt water this is what my dentist told me to do if i feel like there is any kind of infection at all its also really good for mouth health tiny bit unpleasant but if using warm salty water can leave the mouth feeling very relaxed like a foot spa for the gums
and £200 for extraction seems expensive and £1400 for crown seems expensive also

Thank you all so very much for your interesting and useful replies. I am currently rinsing my mouth with salt water regularly - no improvement so far, but we'll see. I'm also putting Sensodine toothpaste on the tooth, but with no improvement. It is relatively cheap from Savers - maybe the more expensive Pronamel is better quality so I'll try it. I'm hopefully going to go on an NHS dentist waiting list next month. I'll let you all know what the second opinion is. Thanks again
well there is nobody knows about teeth like me - please try Colgate Sensitive - lovely taste.
After paying £6,000 for implants and £4,000 for dentures - I have a gumboil in my mouth for about 12 weeks now - it is not painful and I just treat it like a lump in my mouth. Wish I could burst it and get rid of it. Had to send a photo of it to my doctor and she is referring me to the Dental Hospital - it's not open until September. Wish boil would go away. I truly am sick to death of people's hands in my mouth.
