could somebody give me some differences between france and england to put into my course work as i ahve to do a short comparison in my speaking peice but i cant think of any differences please help

Just a few thoughts:

England (or, more accurately, the UK) is a monarchy led by members of a single family. France is a republic, led by an elected president.

Lunch in England is usually a hurried and insubstantial meal. Lunch in France is something to savour and linger over.

Schoolteachers in England frequently run school teams, produce plays, etc. Extra-curricular activities are generally not run by schools in France.

Schools in England have a short working day and open 5 days per week. Schools in France have a longer working day but most only open 4 days per week. (Wednesday is a 'non-school' day in most areas).

English comedians have traditionally made jokes about the Irish. French comedians have traditionally made jokes about the Belgians.

The English refer to the French as 'froggies'. The French refer to the English as 'roast beef'.

If English children play a game where one child vaults over the back of another it's called 'leapfrog'. If the game is played in France, it's called 'leapsheep'.

Buenchico's just about summed it all up, but didn't mention that the French drive on the wrong side of the road and laugh at Jerry Lewis.

France is bigger, but with a similiar population. You can offer some basic facts to support this statement.


Given the size of Paris and surrounding towns in comparision with London and surrounding towns, you could come to the reasonable conclusion that parts of rural France are more sparsely popluated than in England.


N.B According to my husband (who is from Paris), the south of France is more rural and with more of a feel of being a separate country than anything he has experienced in the British Isles.


When you think about it there are a lot of similarities. Size is an obvious difference, with cultural consequences.

The UK use the pound, France use the Euro.


France dump their illegal immigrants in the UK, the UK do not dump theirs in France.


The UK are strong and courageous in battle, the French are not.

State the obvious - the French speak French, we speak English.

You could also mention the climate.

Not sure what woofgang meant about cheese but British cheese is much better.
