The highest break in snooker is generally regarded to be 147, however with a 16 red clearance it is theoretically 155. The first 16 red clearance in a tournament, the World Championships, no less was by Steve James, who scored 135 against Alex Higgins. There have been at least 3 breaks above 147 in various approved club completions etc. The highest of which is Wally West's 151 in a club handicap in 1976. We still await the elusive 155!

TTT, how do you make a clearance of 16 reds when there are only 15 reds in a frame?
Question Author
Before the pedants have a coronary, yes the 155 has been done in practice.
Come on TTT, everybody knows the highest 'possible' break is 155. It's been a pub quiz question since Adam was a lad:-J

Danny, if there is a foul with all 15 reads still on the table and the incoming player is snookered on them all he can opt to take a colour as a red.
Question Author
Yes I know ken but I thought it would be interesting to talk about some of those that have done it.

ken: "Come on TTT, everybody knows the highest 'possible' break is 155" - danny didn't.
TTT, thank you.
Question Author
Yes ZM as I said above it has been done in practice.
