How Do You Pronounce These Words.

I'm from the North, my husband is from the South.
The first time he heard me say certain words like book and look, he told me I should pronounce them as buck and luck, but i know a lot of people here in the North that pronounce the oo's as that and not as a u.
Is it a North/South thing?
How do you say the words that are spelt with a double o?

it's hard to explain without resorting to phonetic characters. Too, took and tuck all have different sounds (to me, anyway) but it's hard to transcribe them in a way that represents the differences.

jno not Too, but double oo within a word so he would say Tuck and not Took.
For example he would say I tuck the buck back to the library whereas I would say I took the book back to the library.

I don't think I would pronounce any monosyllabic word with double o as if it rhymed with the F word. For me, book, look, cook, took, hook, rook all rhyme with spook.

Book, look, took, hook etc are NOT suppose to be said Bewk, lewk etc, tey rhyme with Rook NOT rewk.!

They do Jim, but it confuses me why some words are said differently by some people and I want to know if it's a N/S divide.

Yes there is a north south variation, especially with words like snow - snore.....etc

I will try to give an example with the way I would pronounce the words.
Say the name Luke. You would pronounce it LOOK and this is the way I would say book, look, etc.

People have different accents. People from the Black Country pronounce words like "new" as "noo".

Most people pronounce it like "nyoo", rhyming with "stew", "pew".
