Is it a common/correct pronunciation of the name Menzies or is it only peculiar to the lib dem MP.

This has been discussed at length on Radio 2 with Jeremy Vine today.


The received pronunciation is 'Ming-is' - with 'Ming' as the shortened version - which leaves him open for jokes about 'Ming The Merciless' and 'Mingers' and so on. Someone said that in the north of Scotland, the name is pronounced as spelt, so it may be a matter of regional variation, as well as personal preference.

As in the chain of stationers/ newagents John Mingis or as in the groovy jazz bassist Charles Menzies?
In Scotland the name Menzies is pronounced Mingis, but the stationers is known here by both. I know quite a few people with the forename Menzies, pronounced Mingus.
i have relatives called menzies - and they pronounce it as its spelt.
