However, I know that certain pensions or things you are owed if you die don't always go to your partner, unless you are married, some let you name a person. Also if you have children, you do not have parental responsibility unless you as a father are married to the mother and therefore cannot legally consent to school trips, medical treatment etc. Unless your child was born after April 2003 and you were present at the birth registration, in which case you do have parental responsibility. Anyone before this (like us) have to write to apply for parental responsibility even if you were present at the birth registration etc. Oh and you don't need to take your ring off and leave it by the kitchen sink to wash up.
