"The government is considering an overhaul of the law that would allow AI developers to use creators' content on the internet to help develop their models, unless the rights holders opt out." - of course they are because they are clueless about cause and effect.

May just mean artistes continue to create music out of love of the creation process rather than an ability to milk work done years ago forevermore.

Question Author

The fact is artists, musicians etc have to earn a living through their work. if that can be stolen why would they bother?

AI is a bubble. they are just plagiarism engines.

the proportion of creators who make anything even approaching a living from their work is very small indeed. i do however have some faith in audiences here... i don't think many people are really that interested in music/books/tv that hasn't been written by a person.

paul mccartney is right. the proposed changes are all downside and no gain... i hope the government does not impliment them

If people can't copy other people's stuff and claim it as their own, then why should AI be allowed to do it?

^Good point.

"Let he who is without sin..."

'for many years and long spells of their career, The Beatles were accused of helping themselves to generous amounts of inspiration by black musicians, something that often strays into the realm of appropriation and sometimes, outright thievery. From having to settle out of court with Chuck Berry’s publisher for the song Come Together, to Bobby Parker to The Lovin’ Spoonfuls, there is no shortage of records of The Beatles taking other people’s songs, melodies, words- and passing them off as theirs, so much that there’s a whole book about their plagiarism. John Lennon defended his band’s propensity to be thusly inspired by saying “It wasn’t a rip-off; it was a love-in.” '

Missed the final sentence.

'Paul McCartney simply said, “We pinch as much from other people as they pinch from us.”'

There are only so many notes, combinations of notes and so many words plus combinations thereof.

Once these are used up we arrive at Olly Alexander. 👧
