Why is it that when a politician stood up and admitted (eventually) he was an alcoholic he lost his job, yet another who was caught out "embezzeling" public funds to pay Council tax on one of his homes, kept his?

Well, the inference from the question is that CK was sacked, which was not actually the case.

CK resigned, because he had lost the support of his MPs in parliament, nearly half of whom signed a letter saying they would resign en masse unless he went. The media also had the knives out.

JP on the other hand, would seem to have the support of his department, and his colleagues ; nor do the media seem to be as worked up about it, although I will freely admit I have not been looking at the papers lately.

Charles Kenedy's admission of alcoholism is not in itself the reason for his party's loss of confidence - it was his persistant avoidance of thie issue - advising those closest to him that he had received treatrment, and was in control, neither of which appeared to be the case.

It is a sure thing in politics, that come election time, the media would have got hold of this, and CK would have become an election liability, so he was jetisoned before any more damage coiuld be caused. He is still, of course, an elected MP.
