My next door neighbours are a family of alchoholic tone deaf ,karaoke singing ,football fans, that all have to shout every conversation. They all sleep very heavily after their parties that proceed into the small hours too! Therefore making it impossible to wake them up in retaliation. Both of our houses are privately owned rendering the council powerless ,and the police are a waste of time, also i don't want to lose value on my house by having to go through legal channels!!!Thanks all.

Whether it is council or private doesn't matter , you can still call in the local noise pollution (or similar) officer etc . The council should be able to give you the details.

Good luck.

The only way is to prevent them from sleeping too and when they complain just say, "tell you what I'll shut up when you do". Get some industrial strength speakers and put them against their wall when they want to sleep. We all need sleep even this scum so fight fire with fire.

The official way may eventually work too though and Mikey is correct the council should act regardless of who's property.

Invite them around to your house one at a time when they are in full party mode and let them get an idea of what you are putting up with. Ask them if they think it is a reasonable amount of noise and ask them do they also want to be good neighbours, or just carry on making destroying your peace in your own home.

A scaffolder set up business on the boundary at the end of our garden a few years ago. Can you imagine the noise all day, every day? This went on for a few months until my husband went to speak to him. To put it mildly he wasn't given to small talk, so out of desperation we contacted our Town Hall and were put in touch with the Environmental Health Officer. This is what he told us to do.

1. Keep a diary of dates, times, frequency of noise. 2.If possible, but not necessary record the noise. 3. Then get in touch with him and he would come and make a decision. This he did whilst the scaffolding poles were being unloaded! Problem solved for us.

Now barneysdad, this is just my experience, yours is a little different but the procedure will be the same. The first step is to go and see your neighbours and calmly explain your problem. Perhaps they don't realise what misery they are causing and hopefully do something about it. If not get in touch with your local Environmental Health Officer at your Town Hall. Hope it all ends well.

I'm not suggesting you should do this but the following would be an amusing ruse....

crap in newspaper - put it on their doorstep and set fire to it. ring their doorbell. They will come out and attempt to stamp it out getting crap all over their trousers

Or you ring a skip company pretending to be them and order a skip (payment is on collection) hence they would have to pay to have it removed or would get a skip stuck outside their house for weeks

My opinion is always go through the council. I once had a couple living next door to me who had 3 dogs which they would let out into the garden at 6 am every morning and go to work.Me being a shift worker would be woken on a regular basis by the barking.I tried asking them nicely but to no avail so I phoned the council and was put on a waiting list for recording equipment that worked on a time button i.e. when the dogs bark you push the button and the time is recorded. When the technician came around to install the equipment in my bedroom he said you've only got this for 2 mornings so you must get some evidence!

So to ensure I got the right result I cut a full size catshead off the front of a box of "GO CAT" stuck it on the end of a chopstick and at 6.02 am stuck it out of my bedroom window and waved it a few times which sent the mongrels ballistic only then I would bush the button to record them . I repeated this every few minutes for about 30 minutes on each of the 2 mornings .

Hey presto !! the council agreed that I had a serious problem with this issue, issued the neighbours with the correct legal documents. The problem ceased.

Buy a huge sub and a hi-fi test disk, play some subsonics, then go away for the weekend!! It will give them migraines and sickness and hopefully they will be too ill to party for a few days and you shall have peace for them! Every time it starts up again, stick that disk on and off to a mates house you go!! Ask another neighbour to spy out for them putting out your windows or something though. ahem!
I had a friend in this position once and his response was to take the family out for day. Before they left, however, he turned his stereo to full volume, and turned the speakers against the partition wall. On his return there was a meeting with the neighbours which resulted in a much better understanding. Mind you, I don't think this would work in every situation.
create noise when they are asleep, perhaps when u go to work or something in the morning. mayb in time they will get the picture

I am in the very same situation at the moment so I read every post carefully. I live in a maisonette downstairs, which I purchased over 2 years ago. The flat upstairs is rented. About 3 months ago, a looser on state benefit moved in, with the whole area with him by the sound of it. Since then it's non-stop shouting, loud music, parties etc etc.

Your neighbours, like mine, dont seem like the type you can reason with. You can still try to talk to them, politely, tell them you dont do that to annoy them but that you'd like them to be more careful etc. If not, take it up with the council. The council is notoriously slow and rather on the inefficient side, but go through them if you want to do things the right way. I dont have much faith in the police. Only contact them if things escalate really badly.

The last possibility is to take justice in your own hands and try what a few people have suggested on this board. It can be very satisfying but whatever you do, please remember that these people generally speaking have nothing for themselves, and they have very little to loose. That means that you could loose more than them if they find out you raised a complaint or tried to take revenge. This is what keeps me from acting right now, I'm just doing a details log of all the disturbances for now. And I'm hoping they only rent for months and then move on...

Sorry if I'm not being too helpful here. I can only share your feelings, and sincerely hope things get sorted soon.

Best of luck

I have found a new technique for getting back at my neighbours and it seems to be working!!!They seem to be the sort of people that like to operate in social groups,I now act as if they dont exist ,If they say hello i just ignore them or just scowl at them .I am having fun playing with their tiny minds....What fun!!
Just play this noise and revenge. There are noises: drill, party, unhappy dog and others.

I have won. Just by sitting patiently.
1 .the gobby woman ran off with his best friend.
2. the gobby kids both got sectioned.
3. the bloke killed himself.
4 .the house stood empty then got sold.
I didnt want the bloke to top himself as he was actually the only one that was aproachable.
this all happened about 2 years ago and life is sweet.
Truly glad to hear yours went 'well' Barneysdad, its a result for 'us'!
I have to live in a rubbish area due to my own finances and I am so pleased to live next door to someone that
1) cant be bothered to work and so chooses her own bedtime, what ever time after and obviously uses the daytime to catch up on her sleep when I work hard...
2) had 2 children when she moved in but since they're no longer there, lost custody of them? ... I'm sure that says it all....
3) loves socialising through out the night with mates (who obviously work as hard as she does)
4) spends her dole on drink or maybe a bit of cash in hand on it?

Life sucks...spoken to her, wrote to her, but why am I worried about officially complaining and 'rocking the boat', cant someone else take the bull by the horns this time, I love flats...even moved from one before because of another noisy woman, bitter...just a bit

We know about neighbours from hell. Currently we retaliate with 1. noise (sport talk on the radio, etc). close to their bedroom wall - when THEY want to sleep. Not TOO loud, just enough to annoy. All night. Every night. Until they get up - usually midday. 2. Cell phone blocker - really messes with their party organising, etc. 3. Incense - close to their open windows. 4. Liquid Ass - which is so effective I made a website about it...

Description:
I've lived by people like this for yeeaars! After so much stress and torment, now I seem to have adapted the ability to do my work with loud rock music throughout my house ALL day. They object so I turn it up so I can't hear them. For 7 months I've been woken up by them every morning at 7am. Now when I go to bed at midnight I make sure I step on every fu**ing creaky board as heavily as I can. If you are worse than them, they might leave...you never know.
I unfortunately live below an ex-heroin addict who likes to collect his state benefit cheque every thursday, spend ALL of it on cheap strong lager (Carlsberg Special brew to be exact) and combine it with his methadone to "get really mashed". This is his life, he does this every thursday without forgetting. Unfortunately what follows is a lot of door banging, shouting, and general nuisance noise. This morning it was scraping across his bedroom floor and banging. The guy is, to put it simply, an ***. (please excuse my language).

Because he is on the mental health list, getting him removed from the property is as good as impossible. Now to talk to this guy in the street, you would know straight away there's something wrong with him, he acts suspicious, quiet, and if anything nervous. That is of course, Until he's had his "medication" of a cocktail of Weed, Methadone and alcohol. He claims he has post traumatic stress disorder. This is what he apparently gets his benefits for but he does absolutely NOTHING to help himself.

Frankly, I would love to ram my fist down his throat but this thing called "the law" exists and prevents me from doing so.

What gets me, is I've suffered depression for 6 years, it kept me out of work for more than 5. 6 months ago the Job Centre said I could work part time if I wanted to, as it would be therapeutic and good for bringing my mood levels back up. I literally JUMPED at the chance, i now have a part time weekend job delivering Food (It's not academical, but it's a job) - This turned out to be the perfect starting point for me! I feel so much better in myself, bit by bit I'm getting more social interaction and it's giving me a purpose.

The downside with this, is that I work til quite late (1am normally) - And all is quiet when I come in, until about 6am when I get abruptly woken up by the idiot upstairs banging and shouting. (He has a very odd sleep pattern, he usually goes to sleep at 5pm, wakes up at 8pm, back to bed at 2-3am and up again 3 hours later).

This morning was a classic example, I've had 4 hours sleep. Feel very tired and I have 8 hours of driving to do later, not that it's "hard work", if anything very easy but as we all know very well it's not safe to be behind the wheel when you're tired.

Anyway, I'll get to the point - As you can see I'm quite stressed but I wanted to let people know they're not alone on this! And here's a few ideas you can use to get revenge. I've used several over the past few days.

1) Put a private AD up in as many corner shops as you can, advertizing the person's flat/house for rent. Make it cheap (but not too obvious), and specify that interested customers can ONLY call at early hours (6-8am) due to "a hectic work schedule" - The cheap price of the property will guarantee a lot of interested callers and the early time will drive your victim even more crazy.

2) Advertize what ever you can, hi tech stuff (iphones, PS3, XBOX,) For example: advertized an Iphone 4S for £75. Who wouldn't want that??? (Again, ask to call early in the morning)

3) SUPER GLUE IN DOOR LOCKS. (Nothing else needs to be said here)

Good luck!
