Is there a legal limit on the volume nightclubs are allowed to play music? I've heard 90 decibels causes permanent damage and this is the volume where you need to shout to someone 1 metre away from you. In some clubs the music feels like it's way too loud.

It is the responsibility of employers of bars and nightclubs to ensure they are complying with health and safety regulations.

At the moment employers must act if staff are exposed to noise levels above 80 decibels (slightly less than a loud pub) on a daily basis - some clubs can reach 110 decibels (a plane taking off). But it is up to local authorities to monitor and enforce the rules put in place to protect employees from noise overload.

As for customer's, you are not owed any particular noise nuisance protection by the club as you are not "subjected" to it on a regular basis - you can always leave the club. Environmental health officers may come around to the club to measure sound levels outside because they were concerned about the impact of noise on local residents.
