(I've stated it thus because I suspect I won't be allowed to offer the actual word I'm referring to. I believe that, because I - quite innocently - wanted the other day to use the word for what referees do with coins before the start of play and cooks do with pancakes...and was told to avoid obscenities!) Margaret was shortened to Maggie/Meggie and the latter of these was playfully altered to Peggy. Ricardus (Latin) became Richard (French) became the short-form Rick became the playful version as described above.
