Does anyone know if there is a standard computer programme for doing your family tree on so that you can send it to other people etc?

I use Family Tree Maker. There are other ones - they all use GEDCOM which is the standard for sending genealogical information between people.

So is GEDCOM a programme that you buy like say Microsoft office for example?

GEDCOM is the file format. Most Family Tree programs allow you to save your tree in GEDCOM format and you can then email the file to other people. They will need a similar program to view it although I believe you can download free GEDCOM viewers.

You can download Legacy Standard Edition for free at http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/ There are others but I've used this one before and it will save files in GEDCOM format.
