Please can someone tell me how the grades work in South Africa and how they relate to UK school years.

Does Grade 6 = Year 6?

Specifically, I know of a Grade 6 child aged 11 coming to the UK. Does she go into Year 7 as she is already 11, or has she dropped a year somewhere along her life?

I'd appreciate a prompt answer as I'm trying to send an email and I can't find the info on the internet. Thanks!

Grades 1-6 are Primary School and Grades 7-12 are High School. Children generally begin Grade 1 at the age of 7.
Irrespective of the grade/year group that a child is currently in overseas, an 11-year-old girl joining the English (or Welsh) school system will be placed into Year 7 if her 12th birthday will be on or before 31st August. If the girl's 12th birthday will be on or after 1st September, she will be placed into Year 6.
