I Wonder Why This Number Is Rising So...

I don't think i could ever bring myself to call any other person mum or dad. my dad is my dad, my mum is my mum and i could and would never call anyone else it.
does this still happen much? or is it generally use first names? or are other names used like pop, papa, etc as long as its not what you call your own dad or mum.
imagine if you didn't get on with them, and your own parents had died - I imagine it would be like a knife every time you said it.
I know some older people insist on it.
thanks

I, however, would feel like a traitor by calling his parents mum and dad. I don't feel I know his mum well enough to call her anything parenty but I call his dad 'Pops' in a jokey/ affectioate way or by his first name.
