It is an australia expression from the late nineteenth century, and larry ''may'' have been the boxer larry foley {1847-1917}. The word ''may'' also relate to 'larrikin' an australian term for a young hoodlum given to acts of rowdiness. Larrikins were particularly active on the streets in the 1880's and wore distinctive neat and colourful clothing.
