Favorite Street Games from 70's

Trying to put a list together of popular street games for kids in the 70's. Got a few Rounders, Knick Knack, Kick the Can, Relevio,Kerbs .....Any others around to remember? and are they still popular

Mr Crocodile "Please Mr Crocodile, may we cross the river?" You needed a road for this one. Redletter - you had to use paving stones. I hope you have the ever popular Hopscotch.

The one that stands out for me is "Dead man's fall". One person took their turn while the other's stood on a wall. The first person on the wall would ask for a method of death and would jump off the wall as dramatically as possible. Then the other's would take it in turn to dive off as well and then at the end the person doing the firing would decide who's dive was the best then it would be there turn to "shoot" everyone else.

Kerby, skilful trajectory based ball throwing game; you scored double if the ball hit the opposite kerb retroreflectively (back at ya) and you caught it. otherwise you got a point for hitting the kerb at any angle and the other person caught it. mostly a two player game.

Mother May I......from the deepest (deeper than the Marianne Trench as featured in Jacques Cousteau prog) memory I can remember Mother Can I game but do not now how it went. I must have been a toddler watching the other kids.

4-0-40. A sort of mobile hide'n'seek. Player who was the 'looker' counted to 100 next to a telegraph pole whilst everyone hid. Object was for the hiders to touch the pole without the looker seeing them. If the looker did see someone, he had to touch the pole and shout "40-40 Eric behind the bushes" or something similar. Hence, there would often be races back to the pole between the chaser and a hider. The chaser, of course, was not allowed to just stand by the pole; he had to go looking. Keep trying to persuade my kids to play this but they reckon it's boring!

marbles, british bulldog and stuck in the mud, kids at the school where i work play their own version of british bulldog called 'challenge and run' oh and we used to jump hedges too lol

French Cricket, Queenio Co-Co, Flickers, Cabbage Crawling. Ah such memories!!!

I remember how to play mother may I. Someone was elected mother and stood on one side of the street whilst the other lined up on the other side and asked whether they could cross the street by saying something like....."Mother may I take 3 giant leaps across" to which mother would answer yes or no and play would pass to the next player. Other options included fairy steps and jumps. The winner was the first person to the other side. We also played blockioff which was a version of hide and seek. I also enjoyed playing chips which involved me and my best mate pretending to be American motor cycle cops!!!!. Favorite street game though has to be the annual do a "granny" sliding competion whenever conditions allowed. And jumping over people on bikes a la Eddie Kidd.

I think it was called French Skipping - a big loop made out of rubber bands, held between 2 peoples' ankles, and a 3rd person had to perform various jumps - eg jumping in the middle of the loop, on each of the strands of the loop in turn, twisting the bands around their ankles then jumping and then landing on both strands of the loop simultaneously etc.

Alice ...I faintly remember the name cabbage crawling but cant remember what it entailed can you post a brief explanation also flickers thanks.

Cabbage Crawling was the fine art of creeping through people's gardens or other private property, negotiating fences, dogs etc. over a predetermined route, without detection by the landowners. Failure usually entailed a good clip round the ear. Flickers was a game played with flattened cigarette packets. Common ones (baddies) were used to attempt to win rarer examples (goodies) by knocking them over after their owner had leaned them up against a suitable wall, and agreed a suitable distance from which the client flicked the baddies. In another variation (Tips), the goodie would be laid flat and the client would have to land a baddie so that it touched it.

Maybe we were just more mishievous where I live, but 'Thunder & Lightning' was a favourite. For the uninitiated, you knocked someone's door, then run and hid. Cue much amusement whilst watching from behind a nearby wall or bush. A daring variation (only for the most skilful) was to tie thread around somones letterbox and go hide. We then pulled the thread from the hiding place. When the householder closed the door again, you'd pull the thread to knock again, leaving the householder baffled !!! Oh what fun......
