.... when dropping my son to a friends house I noticed a sign ( not even very big ) to the Dyslexia Institute. Does it strike anyone else as odd, that considering their specialist subject area, that they did not choose a picture or symbol for directions to their H.Q. ? Yes I know children are taken there by adults, but surely not every one is fortunate enough to recieve a childhood diagnosis!

Interesting...Can you maybe suggest a symbol for dyslexia?

fi ouy nac daer siht yrrac thgiarts no

perhaps?

It could just be a prearranged symbol, which is told to all people diagnosed or who are going for diagnosis. In which case it could really be anything distinctive and memorable.
Dyslexia rules KO

Dyslexics can read just fine. Most have managed to come up with coping skills well before they reach adulthood.

As for the adults bringing them to the Institute . . . dyslexia runs in families, so there's a good chance that if the kids couldn't read the sign (an unenlightened assumption, of course), than perhaps the parent couldn't either.

I wouldn't say that most people with dyslexia have dyslexic parents. Do you have any proof of this?

As for "dyslexics can read just fine", dyslexia is and I quote, "a learning disorder marked by impairment of the ability to recognize and comprehend written words."

dyslexics dont have trouble reading - but have trouble SPELLING
Oh I think they do have trouble reading.

My bestfriends' son suffers from a form of dyslexia, wherby he has "coding" difficulties. As I am aware of these specific difficulties I could leave him a note - in which I have changed the letter arrangements to make his life easier. He has well above average I .Q. and fantastic mathematic abilities. However he would have trouble picking out this sign amongst all the other signage in this locale. I am not unenlightened, about the subject matter I have worked with dyslexic and dyspraxic youngsters. I am intrigued by your remarks Diane. I would not generalise that all dyslexics can read anymore than than I would suppose all dyslexics cannot read. I was always taught that to assume made an ass (out of ) u (and) me. Difficulties are personal to the individual concerned, whilst falling under the umbrella of a "dyslexic" diagnosis.

I am a naturally inquisitive person: and also like to make the lives of others, just that little bit, easier wherever this is possible. I don't wait to be asked for help if I can see someone's having a bit of bother accomplishing something. I offer assistance!

I have to say it is not often I agree with Spacechimps sentiments .... but they get three stars for the common sense post - any pre arranged symbol! There was nothing in evidence to this end.

Assumptions make donkeys out of you and Diane? I don't follow.

I do really.
