At our wedding, the readings were made by an old friend of mine & our 9-year old bridesmaid. We didn't have a father of the bride to make a speech (a close friend gave Mrs Pid away). But we did have 2 best-men, and Mrs Pid made a speech at our wedding as well as me. So, to answer your question, it's not "normal" but there are no rules either. If you want to make a speech & your bloke doesn't I personally think that would be very cool.
do you mean at the ceremony? I did a reading at my civil ceremony 5 years ago - the beautiful leo marks poem
the life that i have
is all that i have
and the life that i have is yours
the love that i have
of the life that i have
is your and yours and yours
a rest i shall have
a sleep i shall have
yet death will be but a pause
for the peace of my years
in the long green green grass
will be yours and yours and yours
im a girl by the way
