Cyclists rights on pedestrian crossings

Are cyclists legally allowed to use pedestrian crossings [the ordinary Belisha beacon type] and if so what chance does the poor motorist stand of being able to stop without running them over?
Seems to be quite a problem around here with bikes appearing out of nowhere.

its a shame the police dont nick cyclists for all the crazy things they do,more often,they abuse the highway code,take no notice of traffic lights,they are a menace

Cyclists should NOT cycle across pedestrian crossings, they are exclusively for the use of Pedestrians!

A cyclist can only use a pedestrian crossing if he gets off and pushes it across.

Actually, it's not ALL cyclists who annoy me with their habits - just the 'green' ones. Doing their bit for the environment and who have a grudge against every one who isn't. They're usually the older variety and are the ones who flaunt red lights and, yes, cycle across pedestrian crossings.

64: Do not ride across a pelican, puffin or zebra crossing. Dismount and wheel your cycle across.

65: Toucan crossings. These are light-controlled crossings which allow cyclists and pedestrians to cross at the same time. They are push button operated. Pedestrians and cyclists will see the green signal together. Cyclists are permitted to ride across.

66: Cycle-only crossings. Cycle tracks on opposite sides of the road may be linked by signalled crossings. You may ride across but you MUST NOT cross until the green cycle symbol is showing.

Cyclists have their own road user manual, it's called the Myway Code. Ride wherever you want. Ignore all traffic signals. Duck and dive through traffic. Leave cycle lanes clear as emergency refuges for escaping pedestrians.

I am a committed cyclist, South London being a car park most of the time, and I will cycle across a pedestrian crossing, carefully, and only after stopping at the edge and making eye contact with drivers coming from both directions. I also cycle regularly on *quiet* pavements, because I like to stay alive.

A hobby I have is counting the number of motorists using hand-held mobiles - a far more serious and dangerous habit ! I have seen a skip driver, mobile in left hand, held to his right ear, and doing at least 40mph in a 30 zone (don't they all). Trust him to avoid me ? No thanks.

There's nothing wrong with the motorist slowing down before they get to the crossing.

I drive and sometimes when I am a pedestrian it shocks me to find car drivers have a blatant disregard for people waiting to cross, most of them just drive straight across.

Tell me about it saxyjag. I have pass one of these 'go green' cyclists in the morning and he rides right in the middle of the lane. making it very awkward to pass sefely. I would personaly love to cycle to work but its just not practicle for me to do so.

The law states that they are for the use of "passengers on foot" so keep the blxxdy bikes off them{& that goes for roller blades too}
