No, this is not an x-rated question! Why does a 'x' symbolise a kiss? Just wondering the history behind people signing a kiss using the letter 'x'. I have also noticed that none of my Aussie or Canadian friends use kisses, so am also wondering if it's mostly a Brit thing? Perhaps we are just more affectionate?! xxxx

Folk would kiss the Bible to show that what they had done or said was truthful. When folk could not read or write they would use "X" to sign their name and then kiss it to show their honesty and as confirmation. In time, "X" beacame associated wi a kiss.

One simple way my friends and i translate an X to a kiss is because its like one side kissing the other... >< see? which in reality forms an x and the o for hugs, think of one persons arms going around the other and the same for another person when they join each other they start formin an O shape..... do you get that? =)

'X' has been used to represent a kiss from as long ago as the middle of the 18th century. As for why �X' means that, it's probably because the letter actually sounds very much like 'ks', which could be seen as an abbreviation of 'kiss'.
In addition, as Chulaprez says above, it might also represent two faces seen side-on, with lips puckered up and touching...ie a kiss! It may take a bit of imagination, but try it.

Oh my goodness! I always thought xoxo meant "Hugs and kisses". Therefore X=Hug and O=kiss, because when you hug your arms make an X shape around the persons back, and an O is the shape of puckering your lips.
