how do you find out about dead people?

i last saw a friend of my fathers in the year 2000 at my fathers funeral and have since found out that he has possibly died. how do i find out for sure he has died before i tell my mother?

Maybe you could try the General Registry Office, they hold details of all births, marriages and deaths. If someone has died their death has to be registered.

Just did a google search on General Reigstry Office and they have a web site so you could look at that. Checked with the Northern Ireland GRO and it costs �5.50 for every period of 5 years to do a search on a name, I imagine it is similar on the mainland. Good luck.
