Going to Prague this Tuesday.Can anyone recommend any good restaurants? Cheers!

There are HUNDREDS of them. Depends what sort of place you're looking for and what constitutes "good" Good cooking? Good prices? Good view/ambience? Good service? Are you looking for Bohemian cuisine or something else?

The Allegro in the Four Seasons hotel is lovely. I believe Tom Cruise has dined there! It is Italian, very fancy and a real treat. Not cheap though! You even get a little upholstered stool to put your handbag on!!

I think dinner for two with a bottle of wine (house wine!) was about �150.

Well there's no need to be sarcastic. That there are hundreds of good restaurants in and around Prague is just a statement of fact; before recommending one to anybody I think it's useful to know what they're looking for - it would be no use recommending a Chinese restaurant to someone looking for traditional Czech cuisine, or recommending a steakhouse to a vegetarian. It would be no use recommending somewhere that would cost you 50 quid a head if you only wanted to spend 10. Excuse me for trying to be helpful.

Apologies Narolines if you were only trying to be helpful.I thought you were rather sarcastic. I have been to a very posh restaurant by the river ,a bit nouvelle cuisine, with pics of Victor Havel and Hilary Clinton on the wall. I can't remember what it is called but not sure I'd want to go back.Enjoyed "Prince" ? off the square,good atmosphere and a menu like a catalogue.
So somewhere traditional,central, with a good atmosphere and where we won't be ripped off. Mid price range(a bit vague??)
Alijangra you suggestion sounds tempting. Can you dance around your handbag?

Sorry if it seemed that way; without facial expressions and tone of voice to go on it isn't always easy to tell from purely written messages what people really mean - if you see what I mean!

Anyway, if you liked U Prince you'll probably like the Zlaty Dvur, in a little alley just off Jilska (off Karlova). It's a former Catholic Seminary that serves really good quality traditional Czech food and won't break the bank. The courtyard tables may or may or not be in operation at this time of year - probably still a little early - but the dining room is very pleasant. It's quieter than U Prince, but has a jazz trio at the weekends.

I haven't been to the Grand Evropa in Wenceslas Square for a couple of years, but it used to be excellent value and the Art Nouveau dining room was still pretty well as its designer intended. I believe it has had a change of management and a "facelift" in the last year or two, so it may not be all it was (or of course, it could turn out to be better!) We once had a wedding anniversary dinner there (only about 6 years ago) and four courses, a bottle of reasonable wine, a bottle of Sekt, coffee & brandy came to about �35 for two! Prices, sadly, have rocketed in Prague over the last 5 years, but it's still possible to eat well for a modest sum if you look around.

If you want to splash out a bit more The Fish Market (yes, really!) in the Ungelt (behind the church in Old Town Square) is very good, but can be a bit pricy (not in the 4 Seasons league, but definitely upmarket of the other two). As you might expect, they specialise in traditional fish dishes, but they do other dishes as well. That was another wedding anniversary.....

I'd be interested to hear where you finally do go, even if it's not one of my recommendations - there are still plenty of places I haven't been to in Prague, despite having lived and worked there for a while, and I'm always on the lookout for somewhere decent to go when I go back to see friends once or twice a year.

Cheers Narolines, thanks for the comprehensive reply. Will certainly have a look at those two and will let you know where we end up.Must take a notebook to note names though ,how do you remember street names as well-very impressed.

Hi! Be careful when eating in same restaurants. Some waiters try to rip off tourists. When we were in Prague we used www.prague-airport-transfers.co.uk They took us anywhere we wanted for a great price and recommend us many good restaurants in Prague. And they have English speaking drivers.

Had a great time. Looked in on the Grand Evropa and had a coffee but didn't eat there.
Revisited U Prince again and really enjoyed .Fairly reasonable as it is right off the square.You do need to book though if you want to be upstairs with the live music.
Went to Metamorphis(Ungelt)not cheap but very good service and an interesting menu-purple goatfish anyone? WE weren't brave enough to try it.

Narolines We couldn't find your other recommendation and we did go up and down the streets you mentioned. Maybe the name has changed?
U Supa was another one we went in and enjoyed.I had the traditional dish -beef with cranberries and dumplings-delicious.
A good bar "The Marquis de Sade" .Don't be put off by the name .An old brothel with the viewing galleries intact! Wednesday they had a great guitarist on playing songs from Hendrix to Britney! Warning -great in week but Friday night couldn't get in it was so busy.
