unusual names

has anyone chosen an unusual name for their child? we chose fabien for our son, which is french. if in the future we have more i would like another unusual name as i dont thank fabien and dave or john would have a ring to it! quite like fabien and faith (for a girl!) but cant think of many boys names.

you quite like fabien for a girl aswell as having a son called fabien,you cant do that cos fabien will get a complex . try troy or jesus if your allowed to call your son jesus other than that ive allways liked barrowclough and arkwright

ulich is eastern european for god like and can be combined with a planet say for instance uranus meaning intelligent warrior to give any boy a name to be proud of.

Our Son's middle name is Eran, not to be confused with the feminine Erin.

Eran was the name of one of King David's cheif musicians and put many of the psalms to music. We are both musical people and so we liked this connection. It often gets misheard as aaron of course, so I wonder if it is an older for of the name?

Also, of course, however unusual you think are being, their will always be someone else called that unless you make up your own name. There is no longer any original text.

I called my daughter Kiera-Devon.

Which is VERY annoying for her as everyone spells her name Keira and no matter how many times I say it's the proper way to spell it - just Kieran without the N....everyone still gets it wrong.

Sorry myfringe, but having had my unusual name for 44 years I can confirm that your child will have their name spelt wrong all their life. If you do insist on unusual names or unusual spellings (eg I've seen Amiii, Lili and Cait) then you have to accept that people will spell it the way it sounds to them.

Thing is the 'everyone' I mentioned are her Uncles, her GP and her School! I think out of respect they should get it right at least once!

aaah myfringe ~ one of my daughters has a very hard name to spell.......Rachael. I have lost count at the amount of teachers who spell it Racheal or Rachel!

My son is called Lewis and is often referred to as Louis (even his grandad spells it that way). Don't have any trouble with my other daughters name ~ Evie. My youngest daughter is called Harley..most people take pleasure in telling me it's a boys name and I should have spelled it Harlee or Harleigh. Grrrrrr.

My youngest daughter is called Freya, people are ALWAYS spelling it wrong. They either spell it Fraya or Frayer. Luckily, at the moment, she thinks it's great being able to correct an adult on their spelling.

My daughters boyfriend is called Zook, he's 26 and hates his unusual name. He says if he has a son it will be called Robert or Peter!!! So you just can't win.

My brother has a very common name Iain, yet everyone spells it Ian. Can't win again!!!!

i named my daughter after my sister: Tifaine. Obviously, there is an an acute accent over the 'e'. but I have yet to learn how to do it on here.

It doesn't bother me that people need to know how to spell it, it bothers me more that people in this country have no idea how to pronounce an obviously french name. We have no problems in Europe of course.

P.S this is the original spelling of this name as a christian name. The more comman spelling Tiffany is the surname spelling, as in Mr Tiffany, the jeweller. Also, it is said in our house with a sevenoaks accent and bears no resemblence to the Tif'nay that one sees on websites such as chavscum.com. Unusual names can be tasteful, but there is a fine line over which you must not go :-)

I was reading a trashy magazine tonight which had an article - A-Z of weird baby names. One person called their daughter Alien. Poor kid

If your going with the french theme then Stephan or Auriel. Avril for a girl or Chantal. Not sure if they are any good for you but i think they are quite nice.

We were going to spell our youngest daughter's name Aimee. Our six year old took one look at it and said "that dosent spell Amy"... We called her Amy !

Now she is at university and has taken to spelling her name Aimee.

The moral is you just can't win !

I would urge you to think in the long term - it is nice to include some reference to ancestors in the name... it will help family historians in years to come !!

Eg some mothers' maiden names make interesting middle names and may 'preserve' a name that would otherwise die out.

and Julian, i always thought it was kind of cool how they all rhymed!
