how do i find out if and when someone has died

i have just been told that an old friend that i havent seen for about 20 years has died but i cant seem to find any info about this without paying a small fortune. does anyone know how i can get this info for free because i dont want to be sending flowers etc if this is not true. the trouble is i dont know where they live, i think its in Nottinghamshire? but i have no address.

Very often the local newspaper - online- will have obituaries that you can search

i have tried to search newspapers but i cant find anything, the problem i have is i am not sure exactly when he died or the exact area, all i know is it was in nottinghamshire.
i dont know what papers are available in the nottinghamshire areas

what about the last place of employment,if you know it. If your thinking of sending flowers,then you probably have the address of parlour,try ringing them and explain what you know of the person. They may be able to help

I live in Nottinghamshire Try Nottignham Evening Post, Mansfield Chad, Worksop Mercury, Newark Advertiser . I don't suppose you could give me his name.

I know that Co Durham registery office have a searchable datebase which is free to use, hopefully the area where you are might have the same

Try using his name in a google search if it's not too common. Also try doing a search on the name on the local paper's website.

his nam is John Verity he was about 51 yrs old and the last i knew was he lived in or around Redford. if anyone can help me i would be very grateful.

there is an Andrew at the same address but I have Lynda different spelling

THANKS AGAIN, yes you have the right family. Lynda is his wife and Andrew is his son. now all i need to know is, when he died i am in a bit of a panic because i havent seen them for 20 years and i would hate to send flowers or call them only to find that this happened a long time ago . this would only be more upsetting to his widow.

i contacted notts council as advised they put me onto B,D&M for Retford and they confirmed what i thought, John died on 5th June. thanks to you guys, & gals. i now have all the facts. now i have to find courage to talk to his widow after all this time.
