It means Pool. Here's a lovely website with the Cornish names and their meanings.

OOOOOOOOO Ross........I have all the Winston graham books in the series apart from Stranger from the sea, i lent it out 20 odd years ago and never got it back. I have the first two series on DVD and I also have the Book Robin Ellis did on the making of Poldark, bought that about 15 years ago. One of my first editions is signed by Winston Graham on the title page, the Four Swans I think.

Sorry if you were just asking about the name, and aren't a huge poldark enthusiast like myself. lol

Cannot remember the exact words, but when we holidayed in Cornwall (as a child), most postcards used to carry a ditty on them "Pol, Park or Pen - you'll know your Cornishmen!"

I knew it as 'By Tre, Pol and Pen...' - I think I got it from an Enid Blyton book?
Thanks jno,

Guessed I had got it wrong, it didn't sit right when I typed it!!

After all, it's many year ago! *sob*

By tre pol and pen
you may know Cornishmen

It's in Kenilworth - isnt that by Scott ? Certainly not Enid Blyton - she wrote far more weightier stuff. Presumably he was quoting a saw....
