It is a surname used as a Christian name, the way my Dad's middle name was Spencer, taken from the surnbame of his paternal grandmother. Bamber was used as A male Christian name from the late early 1800s, as was the trend for making surnames into christian names to add more choice,especially for boys. Bamber was probably a surname in his family.
Apparently he is not the first Bamber Gascoigne
