Why are the Drains in the Fens called Forty Foot, One Hundred Foot, Sixteen Foot, etc?

Surely it can't mean depth?

The distance between the embankments on either side of the drains ..for example the hundred foot drain here

But note than some have been widened since originally being dug and named.
