It really depends as to what standard they have trained upto both of my parents are psychiatric nurses, my dad has trained for 22 years and although your right he can't prescribe drugs only hand them out , my dad is in charge of his ward and does have some say like he can give a recommendation to have some one sectioned or let someone go home and he is not the most fecked up person I know.
Actually I just asked my dad and he says he can now prescribe and nurses have always been able to section patients , a police officer can actually section someone its called a 137 where they can, my dad could section someone if he though they were a danger with the appropriate back up, a gp is only needed in a community house. My dad says he can also make a diagonosis

For once why dont you get of your high horse and read what I put I never said they could do everthing they can now prescribe certain drugs and if they think a patient is in danger to themselves or the public they can have them sectioned , like I said all it is is, when necessary they have them abilities and are now quaified and a mere nurse as you so nicely put it my dad trained for 7 years and could qualify as a doctor if he wanted he choose not to some nurses study just as hard, he has worked with mentaly ill people for 30 years in total and prob has more experience than some newly qualified doctor so give it a rest PLEB and for once accept that you might not know everything
I am a psychiatric nurse. I nurse therefore I am. generally i drink tea and talk a lot. It is my job to care for, moniter and counsel patients. I have close and regular contact with patients and so i feed back to a wider team of health care professionals involved in that patient's care. but mainly i drink tea.
