does anyone know any web pages which display information on the subject of why the "whodunnit" remains popular today?

The actual text there sounds perfect for you but please note this was a paper written i think in 1957, however, if anything the theory is more valid today simply because we all have alot more to deal with, and this sort of escapism is still popular for that reason.
google "hardboiled" -- there are a lot of sites devoted to this particular type of "whodunnit" including some fairly philosophical thoughts on its timeless appeal.

Personally, I find detective fiction very therapeutic when I'm stressed or the world seems awry. I like the way the ends are tied up neatly and wrongs are set right.
