I believe he was waiting for an organ transpant - don't know which organ - and died before a donor could be found.

For many years he had been plagued by ill health as a consequence of his contrating an acute worm infection whilst in the Orient, treatment of which included his attendance at the Tropical Institute in Hamburg.
