Maybe this answer will help, maybe not. I'm from and live in Ireland, therefore not in contact with English society directly, yet am exposed to your tv, newspapers, films etc.

The answer you're looking for is that for people like myself, outsiders looking in, the vast majority of 16-24 year old working class English males are roundly depicted as ignorant, self absorbed louts, wearing hoodies, mugging old ladies, wallowing in yob behaviour and in a drink & drugs haze.

This might be unfair, but that's the message being broadcast by your media.
