I have just received an email in chinese off a work friend ...does anyone know how i can translate it to English?

Apart from your nearest friendly Chinese takeaway? Local councils and health centres will have a list of people they use for translating many different languages.
If it's traditional Chinese, ie using a Chinese character set, then heathfield's idea is a sound one.

You could search for professional translators like myself (though I don't do Chinese, I know someone who does), though of course you will have to pay.

The thing about translation is that you get what you pay for - so something like a free Internet machine translation service will give poor translation, which may also be the case if you take it to someone 'down the local takeaway'.

When looking for translators, you really need a native speaker of the language you're translating into to do it (i.e. English), as they will be able to render the text better into the target language.
