My grandmother used to live in Southport, Birkdale actually. It's many years since I've been up there and so I always associate it with certain things from then like the smell of coal fires although that's probably not true any more.
I also always remember trying to catch fish in the marine lake (I doubt there were any there), the funfair that never seemed to be open, and of course the beach that never seemed to have a sea attached to it.
Do you still have red squirrels at Ainsdale? I couldn't believe it when I first saw one there, sitting up bold as you like as if it'd just stepped out of a book!

yes, jake-the-peg the red squirel sancturary is still in Ainsdale, it leads onto Formby beach through the sand dunes. I love this place & visit often. The woods, the squirrels, the sand dunes & twisted trees, the sea, the beach & the ships visible on the horizon heading in to port. The pleasure beach (fair) has closed down completely now I belive. The sea front area has been regenerated and is very nice. Still I prefered the place when it belonged to Lancashire, before the scousers nicked it off us!!
"And here is something that a whole generation of youngsters have been brainwashed into forgetting Liverpool itself is a Lancashire city, just as much as Manchester is.
The fact that Lancashire was horribly reduced in terms of area governed by the county council in the stupid reforms of 1974 does not change the fact that Lancashire exists as a cultural entity and in the hearts of countless thousands.
For Scousers, as much as anyone else in the old county, Lancashire is where they belong."
I'm one of those 'brainwashed' into forgetting. Found some interesting history. Thanks spudqueen.

Thanks everyone. Dot - I figured you were from here by things you've written in other posts. The Dixieland....I do remember but it was 'Follies' by the time I was 'of age!!'
The rumblings about Southport being in Merseyside instead of Lancashire, is still a bone of contention for people here. At the moment, there is heated debate about it in the letters page of the 'Southport Visiter.' Reminds me of the Answerbank!!
We have red squirrels in our garden, so it is not really a novelty to us but visitors are always amazed by the furry little fellas, running around the trees.
