English 'bourne' towns

Why do many English towns have 'bourne' in their name (e.g. Eastbourne, Sittingbourne, Bournemouth, etc)? What does 'bourne' actually mean?

It means stream - eg Bournemouth ' the mouth of the stream' from Old English burna.
