Is it me or are air hostesses getting less and less classy?

I remember when I was younger, they used to be amazingly beautiful, now they seem to be really sour faced old hags.

Its not just you. Since the advent of low cost airlines, the flight attendants have also been downgraded. Blame cheap flying.

i think it depends on the airline - ive never seen an ugly flight attendant on virgin, but american airlines - well!

The last flight I was on had two dead ugly, miserable female attendants. The rest were gay males who were great fun & friendly....although still no oil paintings.

I think the status of the job has gone down as well. It used to be seen as glamorous (think of "Catch Me If You Can"), but really all they are are waitresses with first aid training

American Airlines always has the "veteran" FAs and Ryanair usually has the foreign workers who can barely speak English and who are usually surly.

just flew with czech airlines. very bad service had us delayed for total of about 7 hours but the air hostesses were the best i have ever seen.

Be grateful you didn't fly Cuban airways in the 80's. I think the hostesses were the cuban ladies shot-put team...

I once flew Dubai to Rome on Al Italia and they were all old and fat and rude, like they were doing you a favour, there was only one male crew member and he was young , a bit effeminate and slim and was even admiring his own reflection in the spoons !!!
I have never thought that the job was glamorous just a glorified waitress looking for a rich millionaire to come along and take them away, but I do agree they used to be sooo glamourous, but now they all look like the girl next door, even Singapore Airlines use models/actresses for their tv commercials not actual staff.

Forgot to add I once travel China Airways[never again], the air hostesses were all extremely plain with no make up and little command of English, they wore "Chairman Mao" type shapeless uniform and slippers with a pompom on each foot, when we took off Gatwick /Frankfurt/Dubai one airhostess screamed and became hysterical and the other one got up[ during take off] and gave her a good slap around the face, it did quieten her though!!!!!, then she began snivelling------ they probably took her back home and shot her !!!!

The air hostess making all the announcements on my Virgin flight from Las Vegas last week sounded like a 5 year old just learning to read!!!

I would suggest that many of today�s flight attendants are reflections of the passengers they have to deal with. It�s certainly food for thought. But the other reality is that employment and discrimination laws have changed, as have pay structures (drastically). As a consequence, the poor hardworking flight attendant on a domestic BA flight is not far from matching a salary from McDonalds�and at thirty thousand feet, they can�t escape surly, aggressive, odoriferous, and downright rude passengers!

For the American carriers, in particular, where the flights operate on a �bid� system, the more senior the flight attendant is, the more preference they are given for the routes they want to fly. So an American Airlines international flight will have crew members whose average age is�well more or less�deceased! (the quicker they fly their required hours each month, the more time they have off to live their lives).

Personally, I find it quite concerning as I often listen to them in the galley, complaining how they can�t lift things, can�t bend down, etc. So imagine what the situation might be in a ditching! I�ve accumulated over 5 million miles in air travel since the advent of measurable frequent flier programmes. And I rely heavily upon the help of flight attendants from around the world to assist in supplying goods and help for my charity. With hand on heart, I can honestly say, I�ve only had one bad experience with an individual�s personality through all those flights. Personally, I believe, regardless of the culture, uniform, accent, or airline livery, you always get

Speaking as a former Flight Attendant I can tell you it is a pretty rotten and poorly paid job. Fine for a year or two but no longer, I admire those who make it a career.

Bottom groping apart most of the other tales are urban myth.
