I would be really grateful to hear people's suggestions about how to motivate people to hit their sales targets? I want to know what to say, how to build enthusiasm, the right rewards (it's a mostly female work force). Thanks in advance.

whatever you do do not say anything like 'there's no i in team'. or anything else david brent would say!
'Go Girl, go Girl' usually works. If not, the promise of a rest & a lie down on a comfortable bed.
ooo this might come up on my economics paper, got 3 exams tomorrow! haha! anyway yeah, i have a part time job as a section editor for a magazine (ignite magazine - free magazine going out to every high school in the north west, 1st issue september - sorry had to plug it!), so although my other section editors go for the hard approach, I think the whole laid back casual approach actually works. Obviously ya got to show them who's boss, but I think rather than push them to work, how's about giving them a bonus of about 5% of the salary. It depends how much money you have!... I don't want to question your position, but surely if you are a manager or whatever, you should have a good idea of how to make a workforce work?
Firstly I would suggest that you make sure the sales targets are realistic. I used to work for a company whose sales targets were extremely unrealistic and AFAIK, are still not being met after 12 years or more (this is a national chain of shops), basically because the company opened a store in a relatively poor area with little or no sales research. It really helps to believe that the sales target is realistically achievable and boosts morale.
Loads of encouragement works for our team
Find out more about your team. What do they do at the weekend? Find out what floats their boat. Everyone is different although in a previous role as a training manager I found that most sellers are motivated by although sometimes just a pat on the back and a 'well done' can help.
..oh and not forgeting to make sure that the targets are achievable. Sometimes things like training courses can motivate a team as they can give a new angle on an old problem.
Tell them the one with the lowest figures after three months is out the door......Fear is the key.
You can also try advertising the staffs targets and accomplishments, on a work notice board, at the end of a month the winner gets say, a 25 bonus. That way all the staff can try to better themselves. Its not a lot of money, but would you turn it down. As long as its done in an encouraging way, might help............
