http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_2556899.h tml Has this happened near any of you? I can't say I've seen much evidence of this in the part of Manchester I live in, but then there's such a mix here already it would be hard to notice. I do know from a freind in Wrexham that they have a special day (Tues) in the local courts for the migrants (mainly Poles) and there's a ban on reporters turning up to court that day as they don't want to stir up trouble with the locals by reporting these crimes. Also weekends see a fair amount of friction in town between the local Welsh and the Poles and it's getting worse all the time. Do you think the government should be even considering letting yet more eastern Europeans in given the ill feeling already being experienced in communities?

As Poland et al are in the EU, there is not a lot we can do to stop them. The problem is, that not only do we get the hard workers, we also get the workshy, criminals and the scroungers as well! Their own countries are only too glad to get rid of them.

Why don't we ease our prison population by sending over some of our miscreants in exchange?

I don't actually think we should stop them, they're entitled to be here but they should be an asset to the country once they're here. By and large they are, but at a cost to locals. Rental properties are more difficult to get and the rents are going up for a start.

I think the problem lies with governement and local authorities either not thinking through the impact nationally and locally, or when things go boobs up they try to hide it and mask the problem with such measures as they're using in Wrexham. Does the resentment comes when we're treated like idiots and told things that are blatently obvious aren't actually happening?
I have no problem with an EU made up of countries like Germany, France, Spain, Holland, Nordic countries etc.

But bringing Romania, Bulgaria, Poland etc, and now maybe Turkey, into an EU is just plain stupid.

Or if you are going to have an EU, make it just a TRADE organization.

Saying that anyone from any EU country can go and live and work in any other EU country is daft, particularly when you have countries with such wide social and financial differences.

Why the hell should MY taxes pay for child benefit for children living in POLAND !!.
We even have Poles getting child benefit in the UK and Poland

If they want to work here fine, BUT NO CHILD BENEFIT.

I read about that a while back too VHG, it seems ridiculous that they managed to scam it for as long as they did, though not unbelievable.

I do understand what you mean about those eastern block countries, but sadly we can't have one rule for one and one for the others. It seems they'll let anyone into to the EU these days, regardless of their contribution. What will Romania give us other than tinkers?
Yeah, I bet everyone in France hates those pesky African immigrants.

Zidane, Djourkeaff, Vieira, Desailly, Henry, Anelka, Thuram, Trezeguet.

Who knows, if they didn't have immigrants clogging up the national team maybe their football team would have won a World Cup or European Championship or something?

What? Oh.
I visited a chestnut tree that this time a year ago yielded a mighty crop of massive chestnuts. All I found was empty husks - someone had been there before me. I blamed the Polish. I also blamed them for picking all the blackberries on the common as well a month earlier.
I think it is wrong not to have some sort of control on immigration. I do not have aproblem with people from anywhere coming here to work. But if they have come here to set up brothels and to deliberately break the law by pickpocketing, etc . they should be sent back and not allowed in again. I also dont think they should be entitled to any benefits until they have completed a decent qualifying period and have paid taxes. I think that should also apply to our home grown, lazy, hard faced sods who can but will not work. No problem with those who cannot work because of illnes. I think it is very wrong for the authorities to cover up. Of course it will encourage resentment. But they will only be able to get away with it for so long. But you know that all these critical posts will be condemned as racist. But IMHO it is not racism it is common sense. The line has to be drawn sooner rather than later for everyones sake.

Oh, do they have to tally up exactly?

Do you think the French would rather have four fewer African World Cup winners if it meant four fewer rioters?

Sorry guys, I didn't mean to get you fighting! I was just wondering if you think the govt and councils should be doing more to stop the ill feeling that's already there in these communities or do you think they make matters worse?

I`m surprised it`s taken this long for this to come to light,

People have been voicing their opinions on this subject for years but has anyone taken any notice?

Too late to do anything about it now, the horse has well and truly bolted
jiggy - i think the local authorities and government are causing a lot of problems by denying that there is aproblem and hushing it up. I work for a local authority and know this goes on. If anyone dares to ask questions or voices concerns they are immediately shouted down as being racist. Any politician who voices concerns on behalf of his/her constituents will be hounded out of office. These concerns should be openly debated, without fear. If these concerns are unfounded then no harm done. Misconceptions can be dealt with and everyone is happy. But if these concerns are justified, then they have to be adressed. The authorities cannot keep everything under wraps indefinitely. Public debate is healthy. Denying people the right to speak openly about their concerns will cause more trouble in the long run. Ignorance is responsible for a lot of racism. What is the government afraid of ? What makes them think that keeping us all in the dark is the right way to behave. These people in government are elected by us the public to represent us, not tell us what to do Local authorities are run by councillors elected by the public , and are accountable to the people that elected them. how dare they keep the truth from us? What are they hiding?

Hear hear Sambro! This is the part of it all that annoys me, the way we are treated by people in 'power'. As you say, it's all to easy to shout racist at people just because they raise concerns. And also, since when has someone slagging off your country made them a racist? I thought racism was about race, not nationality? Or have I got that wrong, have councils changed that too?
