Was just on the fish & chips and the north/south divide post and it made me wonder ... where apart from up north can you buy a 'cake' in a fish & chip shop. Not a fishcake as in mushed up crap in breadcrumbs, but a cake as in a fillet of fish between two slices of a large potato, battered? I miss my cakes, they were lovely. Is it just a northern thing? I know they don't sell them where I live now, not anywhere; they've never heard of them.
Galla, I know exactly what yo mean, they are the best thing. I was born in Leeds bur brought up down South, the highlight of my trips to see the rellys was a fishcake!!!!
latterly my parents retired to the North Yorkshire coast, they had them there under the name of patties.
Parents have now both passed away and I'm now living in leafy Surrey so no chance!
They are a uniqie thing - I have tried expalining them to people who haven't had them - they just don't get it!
Sounds yummy. Now to hijack your thread......we were talking about weird things you could fry the obvious mars bar was mentioned. But has anyone ever had a fried Cadburys Cream Egg? or any type of small easter egg? I am amazed that the chippies don't catch on at this time of the year.
Its a piece of fish in between 2 pieces of potato then dipped in batter and fried - yummy. sometimes sold as a fish patty, but this depends on which part of yorkshire you come from
bimbo: I can't say I've ever tried deep fried chocolate of any kind, but I bet it would be nice because I love eating cheese & onion crips and chocolate together and my sister says chocolate cake with chips is scrummy too. Has anyone tried the Mars Bars - or anything else?
The cakes/patties sound like they are a northern 'delicacy' (my mum would pick me up on using that term for fried food, lol) then ... so far anyway ...
We call the fish between 2 slices of potato Patties in East Yorkshire ,no longer eat them as I'm veggie and I do crave them sometimes LOL
fish cakes 'round here tend to be minced fish with potato and seasoning and then battered
My son has tried a deep fried mars bar and he says it's rather nice..Urghh
This is the nearest one I could find but I fear you need a big vat of beef dripping to get the authentic taste.

Don't do those in Scotland that I am aware of, so maybe a North England thing. We do have deep fried mars bars and yes, they do do cream eggs at easter. Some chippies will cover anything you like in batter and deep fry it!
I have never tried them , though a favourite of mine is ice -cream with salted peanuts.
To make the lightest crispest batter, a mixture of Self Raising flour, and a small amount of cornflour, pinch of salt, gradually stir in cold water to make a thickish batter, and drop into very hot oil. Dip whatever you are going to fry in to flour, shake of excess ~, this will make the batter stick
To test the temperature of the oil drip some into the oil, if it immediatly floats to the top its hot enough.
