Thanks to IAP, perigra, stevie and others who gave me advice about Portmerion. We had a week there,got back yesterday and enjoyed everything about the place. Those buildings are out of this world! I know what you meant about the welsh speakers, north walien shopkeepers tend to speak welsh all the time which we thought was a bit ignorant but, most of them were friendly. :-)

I remember visiting Portmeirion when our boys were young. I found it a magical place. It brought back memories of The Prisoner which,of course was filmed there. Did you stay in the village? I'd like to go back again.

Hi yogassun. We hired a small cottage just outside Portmeirion. I loved all the nostalgia from The Prisoner and the coastline was awesome. Will you go again?

We live in Devon, I can remember it took a few hours to get there. At that time we stayed in Porthmadog, or near there.

Hi josie, they really don't mean to be rude you know, in that area believe it or not but Welsh is the first language and English the second as it is where I live, but generally Welsh people are very friendly. did you get to see little place called " Borth Y Gest" just outside Porthmadog? the views from the cliff tops are so beautiful, really lovely place, glad you enjoyed your stay, Ray

Why on earth do you think it is 'ignorant' of Welsh people to speak Welsh ? Do you immediately stop speaking English and speak French when you encounter a French person ?

Hi ray and ladyalex, Im welsh myself from Penarth in S,Wales and must admit I dont speak much welsh. I think its spoken more by the North Waliens. Yes ladyalex of course its our primarey language but surely not when serving holiday makers/strangers? Welsh is spoken more by the N,Waliens than the South or Mid. Still, we had a great time and most places were very welcoming. ray that little harbour in Porthmadog was lovely and as for the view!

So Glad you saw that view, we always try and take people there when they visit us, get fish and chips in the town then go up the top to eat them and enjoy the sunset, amazing to watch.

You are so right about the North Walians speaking Welsh more than the south, once you go down past Dolgellau it starts to gradually diminish, tis a beautiful country, so glad I came here to live, Ray
