Middlesex no longer exists, except for postal addresses and the cricket team, it disappeared with the creation of the GLC in the 60s
Same with Wessex. I think.
********, I'm wrong. Wessex isn't GLC. I'm off in an airy, rubbish answering thing.
But Wessex is no more, if it ever were, apart from the trains. I'm sorry Fish the Mod, this is the third notification thing you will have got because of me and I'm faffing about.
Wessex was never a county; it was a kingdom until the 9th century. Middlesex was a county until 1964, which is when Greater London was formed. The reason why "Middlesex Cricket Club" exists is because the people who play cricket are the sort of reactionary old windbags who don't seem to have noticed that Greater London has existed for the last 40 years and who still refer to places like "Croydon, Surrey" or "Bromley, Kent".
I think I'll be a reactionary old windbag and say I come from Wimbledon, Surrey. Well, reactionary, old and windbag all suit me very well.
County cricket is based on the counties as they were in the 18th century and it will be around a lot longer than Greater London, Tyneside, the Black Country etc. Bring back Yorkshire!
Not very relevant i'm afraid, but middlesex was in the middle, wessex west, essex east, sussex south and nosex north...they died out!
