'Baby on board' sticker in cars

What is the reason that 'Baby on Board' stickers are put in cars. Why do other drivers need this information. Is it to excuse any erratic driving or to watch out for any erratic driving as there may be a little child on board. Does this sticker excuse the driver from not obeying the driving code. what purpose does it serve.

Think this has been asked/answered before, but most logical for me is if the car was in a crash the emergency services will know to look for a little 'un in the wreckage.

I think it's in code. It really means "The driver of this car is an idiot"

Someone realised they could make a whole bunch of money from selling 'Baby on Board' stickers to proud new parents.

I don't actually have one but I want one so that idiots driving behind me would hopefully not wreck into me if not for my sake then for my son's. Also I hope they would excuse my irritating insistance on driving within the speed limit and not tailgate me or flash their high-beams in my eyes.

I agree with yinzer ....also if u got a child on board ur liable to be glacin over keeping an eye on him/her...now if u got a mobile phone as well... stay the hell away from me!!!! in other words approach with care...for ur own sake...

Don't knock them. Many's the time I've been about to intentionally ram a car from behind and changed my mind when I've seen the 'Baby on Board' sticker. And, yes, I am being sarcastic.

We have a sticker and we don't have a baby! It's just our ironic take on life. Don't worry, some of my friends get my sense of humour!

<b>countryboy</b> is right, they were orginally for the fire service etc knowing to look for someone small if there was a crash, but now there more commercial and people use them, as it's been said, to make sure people keep that little bit further back.

It's for smug parents to show off the fact that they are healthy and fertile lol.  And before you all have a go I am the parent of 3 small children and have never seem the point of them either.

I bought one when my children were born. As Yinzer points out it was in the hopes that the thought of a little one in the car might make other road users behind me more thoughtful.

I have heard the argument that placing a sticker will alert the services to look for an infant in wreckage, although I would have thought that a fixed baby seat would be a bit of a giveaway - allowing for the fact that baby might be busy gurgling round at anan's, rather than being catapaulted from a car wreck. I don't believe for one minute that anyone would seriously adjust their driving on the basis of seeing one of these stickers - I declined one when my youngest was born, and sufferend no ill effects.

I've always laughed at these stickers: to me, it sounds like the driver is saying, "If you were planning on crashing into me before, please reconsider, there's a baby in my car!" Silly stuff..

So if you have one of these stickers but no baby, and end up in a crash- the emergency services will be up and down the road looking for the kid ?.

Judging by the way most cars with those stickers are driven I always assumed it meant the baby was behind the wheel.

They first appeared and became fairly widespread in c.1988.  This co-incided with the time when the Liberal Democrats adopted a new diamond-shaped gold logo.  I was always disappointed seeing them because at first glance I always thought that it indicated a politically-active person rather than an idiotic driver.

When I see those signs I myself am inclined to slow down and give that car a little space. I think a lot a people are inclined to offer a little more consideration on the road when driving next to a cautious parent, who is driving the speed limit. Rather than thinking if they drive a little fast and a little more closer mabey they can bully " grampa or grandma moses," off the road. I think that's what the signs are intended for.
