If you think your nationality is English try applying for an English passport. 

 England is just the southermost region of the UK, GB, British Isles or whatever.

It's quite funny, but I never felt particularly patriotic until I started talking on t'internet. People (usually Americans) would ask me if I was British..and I would feel myself slightly bristling and say "No, I'm English, and I live in Britain" Where does THAT come from, I ask myself??

Surely the UK is, as the name suggests a Kingdom rather than a country, England and Scotland are countries and Wales is a Principality. Britain refers to the islands - Great Britain including England Wales and Scotland, and Lesser Britain Ireland and Northern Ireland. Lesser Britain isn't used anymore and the name Britain is more generally used as an alternative for United Kingdom these days.

I know loads of people who say/write UK rather than Britian. What about addresses? I never write 'Britain', always 'UK' after the country.

Unless there's been an overnight revolution Ireland (i.e. the republic of) is not part of Britain, either Great or Lesser ,whatever that is.

snuggles......I have a similar problem in that I was born in Scotland, live in Scotland, but consider myself to be British first and Scottish second.   Perhaps the reason could be that 3 out of my 4 grandparents came from England. What sort of mongrel does that make me?

galltin......the Irish Republic is part of the British Isles but not of UK or GB.

I was born in Scotland and I class myself as Scottish and I never call myself British.  I am Scottish through and through

I have always thought of myself as British more than English, but that does not change the fact that England is a country rather than a region or a county.  It is not a nationality in the legal sense of passports etc.  TTML

Have never called my self British always English I even cross out British on forms i fill out and put English above it. But thats just me !

Northern Ireland is part of a country called Ireland in the English language and �ire in Irish Gaelic.
