GENDER CONFUSION

I'm constantly being surprised to find people on AB that I assumed where men are actually women and vice versa!Does anyone else mistakenly assume the wrong gender of members?

There is no way of knowing unless the content of the post makes it clear. Personally I have found it a refreshing exercise in open-mindedness, which I try to cultivate at all times, but we are all fallible!

people on the music site thought i was a man, perhaps people think women dont have any opinions or knowledge,,if in doubt of a persons sex it is best to stay neutrel,and not refer to them as he or she,,i was also referred to as old,,and i believe old is a state of mind and down to the individual,,by the way i am past a certain age but have not yet retired to a rocking chair listening to val doonican, its a good job i have a good sense of humour,,,mullein

Yes I've made mistakes  - and it's often understandably assumed that I'm a male.  I mention it sometimes in my replies if I feel it's necessary -  I've thought of changing it but it really doesn't matter that much does it?

I had a long conversation with someone a couple of months ago on MSN who I was fairly certain was a guy from the US, but was in fact a 19-year old student at Glasgow Uni... I guess it shows why we should be careful who we talk to online...!

Yeh, georgit79, I (initially) thought you were male - until you pointed out otherwise. And, only recently, realised IndieSinger WAS male. As NoGoodBoyo says ..... it's a refreshing excercise.

IndieSinger isn't male.  She's a woman.  I know, because I've met her.  She even posted links to photographs of a man with silly hair pretending that it was her, deliberately to confuse people, but actually those pictures are of her grandson.  WVNBIVDB

Actually bernardo is of no particular gender, and likes to be referred to as pe and per.  Pe likes to use colours in per posts because per vision is just black-and-white, and pe misses colour vision.

 

I've been mistaken for a man (inexplicably, as I seem to talk about being a mom in 73.9% of my posts), and I've been mistaken for being middle-aged as well.  I also find the whole thing refreshing.

Used to think indiesinger was a girl and woofgang was a bloke.  Wrong on both counts I think.  Always dangerous to make assumptions what say you Jenny Tools?

Indiesinger is as confused as you are.  One day he/she will get it sorted but it will take time.  Only smarties really have the answer to this one!!

Its often assumed that I am male. I mention that I am not in passing, but one of the things I like about the net is that it is a place where gender doesn't matter. I do try not to assume but as NoGoodBoyo says, sometimes you just do!
