Apart from putting on a Scream mask and chasing them down the road with a chainsaw, what should you do when a kid on your doorstep says 'trick or treat'?

NOT answer!  if you do then throw sweets at them, keep the chain on your door these days
If the kids where you live are like the ones where I live...then HIDE under the bed & wait to be firebombed.
Turn the lights out and pretend you're not in....we've done that for 10 years and not had any problems!!

My father used to make nasty-tasting sweets from salt, flour and pink food colouring.

we give them sweets round here.  they even smile & say thank you!
I just don't answer the door.
LOL Hayhoe, that's awful!!! We just give 'em a candy and comment on their little outfits. It's fun. Always remind them to be careful what they eat (some childhood tales of the boy who bit into a needle)... Standard stuff.

Hello, Shaw by name, sure by nature here!!!

I'd just like to say that trick or treating is no laughing matter, and children should not be encouraged. Devils and ghosts and sprites is a serious business! Jesus doesn't like it.

We put a sign saying " left choccies with neighbours gone out for dinner"!
Say 'Trick' then unleash the hose on them...
Oh give them sweeties and stop being such a meanie!

It's not a case of being a meany. There are old people in our street who dread the thought of trick or treaters. Every five minutes there's a knock at the door. Some of the older kids can be quite abusive if they just get a lolly pop and the tricks they play aren't nice. Who wants the front of their house egged. The best thing is to just not encourage them.

Oh, did not get that, the kids round my way who trick or treat are usually nice kids accompanied by parents! In that case, turn off lights and pretend to be out, that's what i did at uni when i was too skint to buy sweets!

Throw a bucket of water over them and tell them never to beg on your doorstep ever again

-just kidding

I just  ignore the knocking and turn the telly up!

We don't get many trick or treaters now, since one year my Dad opened the door to some and said "Trick" they looked from him to each other and back again and said "you are supposed to give us money" my Dad said "No I want a trick!" needless to say they went away empty handed from our house. Cold hearted maybe but when the rest of the year they terrorise the streets around where we live and intimidate people you start to see his point.
Oh and they don't bother dressing up either!
give them a pack of ciggies each.
