Nice village type place to live in greater manchester without kids

I currently live in north manchester and want to move to somewhere nicer which is a village type area but still enables me to get to work in trafford area easily. want the best of all worlds, ideally bungalow area where there aren't families with kids which is quiet and relaxed but I can still walk to pubs, restaurants, live music, shops etc (am only in my forties but can't stand the noise of kids when i relax in the garden - that's why I want to move cos my old neighbours are dying off and being replaced with families). not really bothered whether north or south manchester as long as prices not ridiculous. any good ideas?

Have you tried searching for bungalows around the Trafford area on Right Move? I've just done a quick search and just within the first two pages there were plenty of bungalows for sale on developments specifically for the over 55's.

Even if you don't want to live on a 'retirement' development, these tend to be built in areas which are predominantly older people anyway, so once you find out where they are then you can look into the areas in more depth. Hope you find something that suits you!

Does such a place exist in Manchester? No kids? Not sure if it does! There must be some places near Trafford that have little pockets of estates more suited to older people with grown-up kids. Have you tried Urmston or Flixton? Chorlton has all your pubs & culture but it's more like studentville. Burnage was cheap, I rented an ex-council house there for a while and that particular area was very quiet (although there were families). You could always head down to Cheshire if you can afford it, it's still commutable. Or over south Tameside / Stockport, there are some nice villages further afield but not too far.

When we moved into our area we got some funny attitudes from the older folk (most are retired) because we were in our mid-twenties and they thought we'd be having parties and fights every night. We get on really well with them all now and have a toddler as well. Don't tar every young family with the same brush, they could become your nicest (and quietest) neighbours. We certainly aren't noisy.

Thanks for your replies. Had a look around Trafford but it�s all too built up and loads of kids around. Don�t get me wrong it�s not that I think kids are bad, just that I really enjoy sitting peacefully in the garden with a book and the noise of the little darlings squealing, screaming or whatever really gets on my nerves (my kids are grown up so think I�ve served my time now).
I did do a search on utopia but nothing affordable came up! Did a search on retirement properties and a few came up but you had to be over 50 to be allowed to live there.
Had look at a few areas in Bury, Prestwich and Worsley which looked promising on paper, but i suppose the price you pay for peace is that there aren�t any shops or anything nearby. Might have a look round gatley and cheadle next weekend...............
