james70 is correct. If you look at the HMV logo it's a dog next to a grammaphone. Presumably the dog is listening to his master's voice. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will let us know.

The grammarphone logo is because HMV was the first company to manufacture Grammarphones. Emile Berliner invented them in 1888 and his company is the HMV that we know today.
