When you were a youngster, did you dream, or plan, to be 'something ' when older ? you know , like fireman, engine/train driver, a pop star, actor, pilot,  model, just the perfect mum and wife maybe, so many dreams, perhaps so long ago, so many opportunities out there, and yet, what happened ? where did it all go wrong ? or did you succeed ? was your life/future planned and set out before you left school ? example.. living in the valleys of Wales you were destined to become a miner/a steelworker... if both your parents were doctors/ teachers, are you one now ? from road sweepers to rat catchers, to  the top person in your profession, ALL are needed, all in my eyes are equal too, i wanted to be a racing driver, but i HATE  speed ! could never be a police carrying one of those guns, couldnt be a prison officer , done a lot of so many different jobs and yet wasnt completely fulfilled in any of them. do you feel the same today in yours ? if you could change it right now, what would you do or become ? would you want to change ? you have to work to support the family, pay your bills, would your wife/ husband agree, support you in your aim to now fulfill that childhood 'dream ' ? was the late Princess Diana groomed to one day becoming a Queen ? was George w. Bush groomed to become the american president ?  what dreams, what chances, what slipped through your fingers, did you succeed ? is it ever to late to go back and start all over again ? who are you ? and what do you do ? or dream of becoming ?

WANTED TO BE AN ESTATE AGENT WHEN I WAS ABOUT 14 NOW WORKING AS A PRIVATE DETECTIVE IN LONDON

I dont know many people who are now where they thought they would be.But thats the funny thing about life. You just have to go where it takes you.

When I was younger, I wanted to be a chemical engineer, because I found chemistry very interesting and I was good at.  I lost my interest in it when I found out that most chemical engineer jobs are in the weapons industry, and when I got to university and found out there were lots of interesting courses, and the chemistry ones were fairly boring comparatively.

I always wanted to do something artistic professionally, but I don't think I have the self-confidence in my art to do that, and I never had proper training in it either.  For a while I wanted to be a jewelry maker - in college I did do some of that for a little extra pocket money - but I couldn't make a living off of it.

Also in college, I majored in Religious Studies, and thought to be a religious scholar.  But I would have to get a PhD for that, and I didn't do that right away after graduating, and now I probably won't.

Now I'm a pro-choice activist, and I plan conferences.  It's a good cause, and I enjoy what I do, but I can't say that I'll be doing the same thing forever... I am definitely not "settled" into a particular path - I'm still looking for different things to try!

Ideally, right now, I'd not work, and be able to spend more time with my family.  I am the one supporting my family, and my husband and I have talked about switching - having him get a job and me take care of our son, especially if we are going to have another child... but right now it's just talk.  I am not at all sure that doing that wouldn't drive me nuts anyway - there have definitely been times when I've been glad to get out of 2-year-old land and into the office.

Part 1 : Hi 2nd row. As long as you have a living breath in your body and want something really badly , then it's never too late to go back a step and follow your dreams. Sometimes we need to take a step back before we can move forwards. I'm a great believer in fate and my gran used to say 'What's for you won't go by you'. I believe that it's better to have tried and failed than never to have tried at all , otherwise you will only wake up one day as a jaded old man/woman , full of regrets and wishing that you had at least tried to chase what you really wanted. So if you feel unfulfilled in some way , then I think that you should follow your heart. I always wanted to be a policewoman but never quite got around to it. I remember when I was 6 years old , our local community cop visited my school to give a talk on crime prevention and road safety and I was completely captivated. I told my parents that I wanted to be a cop and they never really gave it much thought but when I was still saying it at 16 they realised that I was serious. Why didn't I join ? I wanted to gain life experiences before I made such a big commitment - I met my hubby , got married , had kids , studied psychology and started to feel my dream of being a Police Officer slipping away from me because I felt that it wasn't appropriate for a mother to apply for such a job. (Conditioned into believing that from negative comments from my friends and family) Anyway , what changed my outlook was when a friend of mine commited suicide at the age of 28. He felt that he had nothing going for him and was lost in such despair - no-one saw it coming and it made me realise how lucky I am to have such wonderful kids and a lovely hubby. I vowed then to live every day as if it was my last because one day it will be.
Part 2 : A piece of advice which my dad once gave me and which I try to live by is : Ask yourself one question every day. Has every moment of my life brought me to where I am now ? If yes , then good but don't become too complacent. If no , then retrace your steps and start again. That is exactly what I intend to do. I am due my third baby in 5 1/2 weeks and after  I do give birth (Not immediately afterwards !) I will be following a strict fitness regime with the intention of applying for the Police in about two years time. I will be 31 then but I am not daunted at the prospect of applying late as I now feel ready for it and even if I do not get accepted , at least I will know that I gave it my best shot. Apologies for the long winded ramble and good luck to you 2nd row x

I think life is full of surprises, does'nt matter how well you plan. I went to London when I was 24 for a three weeks holiday/studying wanting to learn english. At that time I was studying Architecture in Rome. I have been living in London ever since and I am 40 now, so I have had to change my career completely ( I am in Travel & Tourism now) You 'll never know what's in store. But I do regret it a bit for not finishing my degree. Maybe one day!!
