I have used Ancestry.co.uk and the National Archive censuses quite successfully but they both (for me) only stretch back to about 1850 with any success. I like the fact that you can buy cheap sessions, say £5 a throw, so you aren't committed to huge outlay. As with all ancestor searches, the more you already know the more successful you will be. You could also try using these sites at your local library as they often have site licences that enable you to browse for free. In addition the local studies sections of the libraries have paper or microfiche copies of the all the published censuses that you can consult for free.
I use ancestry.com, genesreunited.com, familysearch.org (good for parish records but not all on - but I ALWAYS see the original to check), freebmd.org.uk (free births marriages and deaths, but not complete yet), findmypast.com (good for 1911 census, although the indexing is terrible) and scotlandspeople.com.
If you look under History and then Genealogy, I am sure there will be more sites.

best way to start is as jno says and try ancestry for free at the local library.....
